This Messy Winged Liner Look Has Reddit Freaking Out

Reddit’s Makeup Addiction is a place we’re guilty of spending a little too much time, and we think many other beauty lovers are on the same page. It’s our source for discovering unmissable beauty steals, for finding product recs and most importantly for marveling at cool makeup looks created by our fellow makeup obsessees. One that stood out to us on this particular Reddit stalking sesh was a striking, splattered black liner look dubbed “messy winged liner,” by makeup artist Erin Grego.

The look drew in a mix of responses, including some love, some hate and some mixed feelings. “I never know how people are going to react, especially on Reddit,” Grego shares. “I just love showcasing my makeup looks to maybe inspire others to try it out or do something similar.” Negative Redditor comments include those that say it looks like she messed up and others that say it looks like Grego woke up in the makeup she went to sleep in.

“I basically wanted the grunge messy style, but more controlled. So by confining the messiness into a wing liner I got a more controlled chaos,” explains Grego.

Then, there are the positive comments that admire the look’s concept, its boldness and grungy-chic style. Unsurprisingly, the world doesn’t know how to react to makeup looks that veer away from what’s considered normal or trending, but we’re certainly here to applaud fresh, unique looks that celebrate a person’s style and talent — even those that are more for having a conversation about than recreating yourself, like halo brows, fishtail brows and festive Christmas Tree brows.

Here’s How to Get the Look, According to Grego...

1. Prime your eyes with Urban Decay Primer Potion

2. Using Lunatick Cosmetic Labs Pro Contour Book Vol 1, use the brown tones in the palette to create a smoked out shadow base.

3. To create the messy wing, use a mascara wand. Using Urban Decay Perversion Mascara, wipe off excess mascara from the wand so that you don’t have any big globs of mascara. You want as little mascara on the wand as possible so the texture can really come through.

4. Using the side of your mascara wand, dab your eyelid near you lash line and then start dabbing with the tip of the wand to taper the wing outwards. Since it’s a messy look, it’s not meant to be 100% perfect. Dab some mascara underneath your waterline to come full circle with the messines.
