The Best Beachy Makeup Tutorial for the Maximalist, Minimalist, and Well, Everyone
If you share a love for makeup and the beach, you understand the struggle that comes with finding the right makeup products that won’t let you down in the heat, sun, water and sand. On top of keeping your skin safe (aka the most important priority of all), you also want a glowy, dewy, waterproof finish that won’t melt off of your face, leave you with racoon eyes or look like you tried waaaaay too hard on your chill beach day — unless that’s your goal, then totally go for it.
Ahead, we’ve curated the perfect beachy makeup tutorial for the minimalist, maximalist and the in-between with the help of New York City makeup artist Justine Sweetman. If you’re one to rock a full-face makeup look one day and a low-key minimalist one the next, you’ll notice that the following tutorials build off of the same summer staple makeup products so you don’t have to splurge to create three different looks. We gotchu’.
Check out all three beachy makeup looks, ahead.
For the Minimalist
STEP 1: Start by applying a facial sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher. We love La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra Light SPF 60 Sunscreen for fast-absorption and a matte finish.
STEP 2: For an all-over glow, apply L'Oréal Paris True Match Lumi Glotion using your hands all over your face. If you prefer to use it as highlighter, apply a lighter shade than your skin tone on your cheekbones, forehead, cupid's bow and chin. You can also combine this step with step 1 by mixing your Lumi Glotion with your sunscreen. Just be sure you’re applying more sunscreen than you are glotion and you’re good to go.
STEP 3: Finish off your look with Maybelline Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm in Quenched. Not only will this lip balm give your lips a dewy finish, but it’ll keep your lips protected from the sun with its added SPF. For summer-ready lips, we recommend exfoliating before applying your lip balm to reap all of its hydrating benefits.
For the In-Between
STEP 1: Mix your facial sunscreen with tinted moisturizer like IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream for a glowy, blemish-free complexion. Depending on the level of coverage you want, choose between one pump for natural coverage and two pumps for full-coverage.
STEP 2: Brush on a sheer, buildable bronzer like Urban Decay Beached Bronzer along your cheekbones.
STEP 3: Highlight the high points of your face with L'Oréal Paris True Match Lumi Glotion.
STEP 4: After exfoliating your lips, apply Maybelline Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm in Quenched and be sure to keep it close by all day to keep your lips protected from the sun.
STEP 5: Finish your look with Lancôme Monsieur Big Waterproof Mascara for smear-free, voluminous lashes. Curl them prior to coating your lashes if you’re all about the volume.
For the Maximalist
STEP 1: Mix your facial sunscreen with one or two pumps of tinted moisturizer like IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream. Make your tinted moisturizer waterproof by setting with Urban Decay Waterproof Setting Powder.
STEP 2: Brush on a sheer, buildable bronzer like Urban Decay Beached Bronzer to achieve your ideal level of bronze.
STEP 3: Using a concealer brush (or your finger if you’re on the go!) conceal any dark circles or imperfections with IT Cosmetics Waterproof Concealer for a highly-pigmented, crease-free formula. Disclaimer: a little of this product goes a long way.
STEP 4: Curl your bare lashes and apply your favorite shade of eyeshadow. We’re currently loving the coppery-bronze shade named 16th Street from the Urban Decay Beached Palette.
STEP 5: Curl your lashes again and then coat them with Lancôme Monsieur Big Waterproof Mascara.
STEP 6: Achieve your ideal level of bronze using Urban Decay Beached Bronzer.
STEP 7: With your favorite shade of Urban Decay 24/7 Liner, line your waterline and don’t be afraid to add a pop of color (lookin’ at you, Deep End).
STEP 8: Highlight with L'Oréal Paris True Match Lumi Glotion wherever you’re looking to glow.
STEP 9: Wear your favorite shade of hydrating lip gloss. For a pigmented, glossy formula, we recommend Lancôme L’absolu Lacquer. And if you want to play up your eyes instead of your lips, finish with Maybelline Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm for shine and hydration.
Happy beachin’ and be sure to pack your sunscreen before you pack your makeup. Your skin will thank you.
