A Messy Chignon Is the Easy Summer Hairstyle You Need RN
June 01, 2020The past few months of social distancing, we’ve traded in our hot tools and perfectly styled curls in favor of lots of messy buns and ponytails. And with summer and warm weather finally on the horizon, keeping our hair in a messy, unkempt updo actually seems like a great idea. To give our just-rolled-out-bed bun a little more style, though, we’ve taken things up a notch and turned our crazy, disheveled bun into a slightly upgraded and way more fashionable messy chignon. Fancy, right? The good news is that getting the textured look is super easy. Keep reading, because we’re breaking down how to get the look at home with a step-by-step tutorial, ahead.
STEP #1: Give Your Hair Added Texture
Getting a messy chignon calls for an extra boost of volume. To add some height to your hair, apply a texturizing product like Garnier Fructis Beach Chic Texturizing Spray. Then, slightly tease the hair at the crown of your head with a teasing comb. Once you’ve added volume, gently smooth out the top layer to cover the teased hair. This will add fullness, body and volume to your look.
STEP #2: Gather the Hair Into a Ponytail
Next, pull your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck, making sure to smooth out the sides. Then secure it with an elastic hair band. To give a messier feel to the look, pull a few front pieces out of the ponytail and let them hang loosely around your ears.
STEP #3: Create the Chignon
Take the ponytail and twist the hair in circular motions. Once the hair is intertwined, wrap it in circles around the elastic into a bun shape. Make sure you have some bobby pins nearby to help secure the hair into the elastic. Now, gently pull a few pieces out of the bun to give it an undone and care-free vibe.
STEP #4: Pull to Perfection
To relax the style even more, gently pull on the hair at the crown to loosen things up. This will help you achieve more of an effortless look. Set the style with a flexible hold hairspray that will keep the look in place all day and add a bit of extra texture. Our favorite is the L’Oréal Paris Elnett Precious Oil Satin Hairspray.
