Jennifer Renée is known as the first albino beauty influencer. Her passion for makeup and beauty led her to begin an online community called the Albinism Beauty Chat. In that community, Renée realized that many people who looked like her struggled to find inclusive makeup shades that worked well for their complexion. This gap in the beauty community inspired her to launch Ivoree Beauty, a makeup brand that’s made “for the fairest of them all.” It launched in 2020, and the first collection includes a range of false eyelashes available in shades made specifically for those with albinism. Here, we chatted with Renée to learn more about her story and her brand.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?

My name is Jennifer Rhodes, but I’m known as J. Renée. I am a legally blind beauty influencer, makeup artist, performing artist and visual artist. I am from Indianapolis, Indiana, and I am now living in New York City.

What inspired you to start Ivoree Beauty?

I began an online community for women with albinism called Albinism Beauty Chat. Members often ask questions about makeup products that are difficult to find in their shade. I thought it would be a great idea to make a collection of products in colors that work best for women with albinism and also include images of women with albinism in the packaging. I draw all of the art for the product packaging.

Can you talk to us about your lashes, including the different colors and styles you sell?

The first lashes that were launched were the Blondee lashes, which are a blonde color. They sold out within the first day. Next, I launched a white color lash (Icee) and an auburn color (Aubree). We recently launched a black color (Naomie). All of the styles are 3D mink lashes.

As someone with albinism, how has it impacted your life as it relates to beauty?

I feel like I finally have the same product options that everyone else uses. I rarely wore false lashes because they don’t match my natural lash color. The blonde lashes let me do looks that I’ve always wanted to do but never had the option.

What’s your daily beauty routine?

I love to do my skin-care routine day and night. I actually don’t wear much makeup on most days. But when I do, it’s usually a simple neutral color look using foundation, powder, blush, eyeshadow, mascara and a brow pencil. My everyday makeup probably takes less than ten minutes to do. My makeup for pictures may take a bit longer because I like to try out new products and colors.

Makeup is …

Art. There are so many ways to do makeup and bring out a different vibe which each look. I like to do different styles and experiment with colors.

What’s next for Ivoree Beauty?

We want to expand the product line, so we are aiming to raise the funds to bring more products to reality. We recently launched a Book Of Lashes box set, and the Intense Shine Lip Glosses. Next, we have mascaras in white, yellow and black coming out, and the Blondee lashes will also be available in a magnetic lash style.
