Shiny Lips Are Back: Here’s What You Need to Know

Like many makeup trends often do, the shiny lip is having quite the renaissance. From the pouts of ‘90s supermodels and pop stars, the glossy style has taken on a modern, editorial spin in 2017. Determined to master the mod take on this look, I chatted with L’Oréal Paris Celebrity Makeup Artist (and yes, Beyoncé’s makeup artist) Sir John, and here’s what the glossy lip guru had to say.

Make sure your lips are prepped.

Like any successful lip look, prepping your pout is a must if you want your shiny lip to last all night. “Do a DIY lip scrub,” Sir John suggests. “I love to make it out of honey and coarse sugar. Then, apply a hydrating balm before applying any lip products.”

Liner is key.

To ensure your glossy lip color stays put, add a liner base — it will truly change the way your color lasts throughout the night. “You can first line your lips,” says Sir John. “And fill them in with a lip pencil.” Next, layer on your glossy lipstick choice.

Avoid glossy skin.

Sir John confirms that biggest makeup mistake one can make with a glossy lip is over-glossing their skin, as well. “When I go for a super shiny lip, I tend to dial back on the glossy skin,” he says. “You want to create contrast with your look — so if you’re doing a shiny look on the lips, create contrast with your face by using the L’Oréal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation.”

Pick a great lipstick.
