How to Sweat-Proof Your Makeup in Minutes
July 01, 2021Sick of your makeup sweating off within the first hour (or, let’s be real, 30 minutes) of stepping outside? Us too. With summer heating up, it’s time to reach for long-lasting, budge-proof makeup that can withstand sweat and humidity. We asked New York City-based makeup artist Joping Keo for tips on how to achieve sweat-proof makeup.
Prep for the Sweat
Keo’s first tip is to use a face primer that will keep your makeup intact. The Maybelline New York Fit Me Matte + Poreless Mattifying Face Primer blots shine for up to 16 hours.
After you’ve applied your makeup, set it with a powder and a setting spray. The NYX Professional Makeup Can’t Stop Won’t Stop Mattifying Powder contains oil-absorbing rice powder to keep skin matte, smooth and transfer-proof all day. Top it off with the Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray, which utilizes a patented temperature control technology to keep your makeup from creasing or fading in even the steamiest of temps.
If All Else Fails, Just Go With It
Sometimes sweat is inevitable, so keep blotting tissues handy. Keo also recommends working with what you have rather than trying to hide it. “If your eyeliner smudges, don’t feel the need to reapply it — blend it out so it looks more like a smoky eye,” he says. Keep the look from veering into raccoon territory by coating your lashes with a waterproof mascara, like the L'Oréal Paris Waterproof Air Volume Mega Mascara, a lightweight whipped formula that promises to last for up to 24 hours.
The good thing about a little sweat is that your makeup becomes more blendable. If your blush or bronzer starts to get blotchy, for example, use clean fingers to blend it out. “If you think about it, a face that is too matte in appearance on a hot summer day is somewhat unrealistic,” Keo adds. So embrace the glow and let that summer heat help your makeup.
