PSA: Applying foundation on your ears is in fact a thing. This makeup artist trick is usually done ahead of red carpet events and photo shoots to ensure that the skin looks even-toned in every photograph snapped. But does that mean you should be employing the technique in everyday life? Ahead, we spoke toNYC-based makeup artist Mary Irwin to find out.

Should I Apply Foundation to My Ears?

“I *occasionally* apply foundation to ears if talent is on camera, or has very red ears, or if I know it’s super cold outside and exposed skin is going to change color.” says Irwin. Unless it’s any of the above situations, she doesn’t recommend doing it on the daily.

How to Apply Foundation to Your Ears (If You Want to)

If you’re going to be applying and blending your foundation onto your ear area, Irwin recommends using a beauty sponge. “Use the same sponge and whatever product is left over from what you used to blend out foundation onto the face,” she says. We recommend using the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Blend Artist Makeup Sponge and the YSL All Hours Longwear Foundation for this.

What to Avoid If You're Wearing Foundation On Your Ears

Irwin recommends avoiding wearing anything tight around your head or putting on a high-neck shirt before applying makeup in that area. “That could possibly get messy while changing!”
