What the Heck Is Fleckle Makeup? Here’s What to Know About the Colorful Trend
April 03, 2020It seems like every day there’s a new viral-worthy beauty trend hitting our feeds, and today, we want to introduce you to yet another: fleckles. Unlike traditional freckle makeup dotted on with neutral-colored eyeliner or special freckle pens (yes, they exist), the fleckle trend, originated by Maybelline Global Makeup Artist Erin Parsons, is achieved by creating small beauty marks with color.
We chatted with the pro to learn how to recreate the look at home.
How to Create Fleckles
STEP #1: Choose Your Pigment
Parsons says that the key to creating fleckles starts with the right product. “You want to use a liquid color to fleck onto the skin and create a speckle pattern,” she says. “[For the look I created], it extended from a smoky eyeshadow to a multitude of tones. When used with a copper liquid, it looked like real freckles without the task of adding them one by one with a pencil.” If you want to go bold with your color, we recommend mixing one of the NYX Professional Makeup SFX Créme Colour and a little mixing medium for your pigment.
STEP #2: Pick Up a Dry, New Toothbrush (That’s Right!)
Parsons’ tool of choice for creating a fleckle finish is a toothbrush. “Dip a flat, hard toothbrush into a liquid paint and then test it on your hand by pulling back the bristles with your thumb,” she says. This can be done with just one color, or you can have fun with multiple shades. “The motion will launch the product into a speckling pattern.” Pretty amazing, we’d say. Just remember to keep your eyes and mouth closed during application.
“A fresh new take on the freckle is the fleckle!” Parsons exclaims. And we can’t help but agree.
