Beauty Q&A: Is It Possible to Curl Lashes Without an Eyelash Curler?

Are you having a hard time getting over your fear of using eyelash curlers? Or, maybe you’re simply trying to ween yourself off using the tool that can sometimes cause more harm than good if not used properly (read: lash breakage and damage the eyelash cuticles). Whatever your reason is, you’re not alone in wanting to give your curler a rest.

In my case, I was looking to eliminate steps from my extremely lengthy, full-face makeup routine. I wasn’t completely sure if achieving the curled lash look I love was possible without using an eyelash curler (or resorting to pricey lash lift appointments), so I reached out to Keita Moore, celebrity makeup artist and Maybelline New York's U.S. brand ambassador.

Can You Curl Lashes Without an Eyelash Curler?

The answer is yes. In fact, Moore had two solutions to curling lashes sans an eyelash curler — one that can be easily picked up at the drugstore and another that’s completely free.

He recommends that even those with the straightest of lashes will love the new Maybelline New York Volum' Express Colossal Curl Bounce Mascara for its innovative Memory Curl formula that holds the curl for 24 hours. “It has double the number of bristles than their other mascaras and it scoops and separates the lashes to give them a natural curl,” says Moore. “It’s also super lightweight so your lashes don’t feel weighed down and it lasts all day. It really is my new go-to mascara.”

To get the most out of Curl Bounce, hold the curved brush against lashes and extend from root to tip repeatedly in an upwards motion until you get your desired volume and curl. Bonus: It’s available in a waterproof version, as well.

For those that are looking for an at-home temporary lash lift, Moore recommends warming up your fingers with your hand and lightly holding your lashes upwards for about 30 seconds. He says, “This will naturally guide your lashes to curl without a wand or curler!”
