Getting asked “are those your real lashes?” has to be one of the most flattering compliments you can give a beauty devotee. We pride ourselves in our very extensive collection of volumizing mascaras that don’t flake and spend a good amount of time everyday ensuring our lashes are clump-free, full, beautiful and curled to perfection. That being said there’s been a lot of buzz surrounding heated eyelash curlers, so naturally, we have some questions. Admittedly, something about hot temperatures being so close to our eyeballs makes us raise an eyebrow, but the idea of having long-lasting curly, perked-up lashes is always intriguing, too. To help put our worries to rest, we got in touch with Dominique Lerma, MODA Brush executive makeup artist. Ahead, she’s sharing tips on the right way to use a heated eyelash curler without losing lashes in the process. Tip #1 to Using a Heated Eyelash Curler: Make Sure Your Lashes Are Clean and DryAfter choosing your heated lash curler of choice (we recommend the Ardell Heated Lash Curler), Lerma says, “the best way to prep your lashes is to be sure that they are 100% dry.” That’s because wet or damp lashes will not sustain the curl and will fall back to their original shape. She also recommends ensuring your lashes don’t have any mascara residue and are completely clean to help prevent fallout as breakage can occur when mascara is mixed with heat. Tip #2 to Using a Heated Eyelash Curler: Test the Temperature Before You Curl Heated eyelash curlers have been gaining popularity for their ability to give a long-lasting curl. offering eyes that look more awake and radiant. Before taking the curler to your lashes, though, make sure to test the temperature. “Be sure to gently tap the eyelash curler against your fingertips before taking it to the eyelids,” says Lerma. “This will ensure that it is warm and will not burn you (or your lashes).” Tip #3 to Using a Heated Eyelash Curler: Press Down Three Times“When using the heated eyelash curler, hold the curler open and swivel it in a back and forth motion until you get close to the lash line and are sandwiching the hair,” says Lerma. “For a dramatic effect (yes, please), gently press down three times.” Tip #4 to Using a Heated Eyelash Curler: Don’t Over Curl  Now, the scariest part about any eyelash curler is eyelashes getting stuck in the device and being pulled out. To avoid this from happening with your heated curler, Lerma says it’s all about moderation. “I wouldn’t recommend over curling the lashes throughout the day,” she explains. “Limit the application to once or twice a day.” Between the act of curling and the additional heat, curling your lashes once is all you’re going to need for beautiful eyes. Just don’t forget to lock it in with a volumizing mascara, like the Maybelline New York Falsies Lash Lift Mascara. Read More: 14 Mascara Hacks to Help Your Eyelashes Reach Their Full PotentialThe 8 Most Pigmented Glitter Shadows on Amazon, According a Glitter ConnoisseurHow to Gently Remove Eyeliner From Your Waterline Photographer: Chaunte Vaughn, Art Director: Melissa San Vicente-Landestoy, Makeup Artist: Jonet Williamson, Makeup Assistant: Nana Kumi, Hair Stylist: Kiyo Igarashi, Visual Designer: Hannah Packer, Producer: Jessica Thiel, Digital Tech: Paul Yem, Model: Cathia Sanchez
