As the summer heat sets in, it’s only natural to switch up your wardrobe, so why wouldn’t you shake up your makeup routine, too? From switching from matte lipstick to shiny lip gloss, to being extra-vigilant about sunscreen application, summer is the perfect time to embrace glowy, minimalist makeup looks. To help you build your perfect routine, we asked our editors and pro makeup artists to share their favorite beauty tips for summer.

Change the Way You Use Your Primer

“My favorite tip for wearing summer makeup is mixing a primer with your foundation,” says Lilit Caradanian, makeup artist and owner of Elcie Cosmetics. “It thins out your foundation for a more fresh wear.” We recommend the YSL Beauty Nu Glow in Balm, a glowy, moisturizing formula infused with shea butter and glycerin for soft, radiant skin.

Swipe on a Shiny Lip Gloss

Matte lips are a timeless classic, but glossy lips feel so light and fresh for summer. We love the NYX Professional Makeup Fat Oil Lip Drip, a hydrating, ultra-shiny lip gloss that comes in eight stunning shades. Missed Call, a sheer bubblegum pink shade, is one of our faves.

Skip Foundation Altogether

If a traditional foundation feels too heavy on your skin in the summer, use alternative complexion products, like CC creams, BB creams or tinted moisturizers.  The IT Cosmetics CC+ Nude Glow Lightweight Foundation + Glow Serum With SPF 40, is a luminous, fluid skin tint that provides buildable medium coverage. You can also just use concealer after applying your skincare to target specific areas. One of our favorites is the Valentino Beauty Very Valentino Concealer. Despite its incredibly lightweight formula, it delivers 24 hours of hydration and full coverage.

Change Up Your Makeup Textures

“For summer, I always have my clients switch out the textures of their makeup products and look for long wear,” says Giorgio Armani Beauty celebrity makeup artist Tim Quinn. “For the eyes, Giorgio Armani Beauty Eye Tints offer crease-proof washes of color.” The Urban Decay 24/7 Shadow Sticks are another creamy, longwear bet for the eyes.

Always Wear Sunscreen

It’s essential to wear sunscreen every day, even if it looks cloudy outside. “I normally start with my skincare products, and then whenever I’m ready to put on my makeup, I apply my sunscreen,” says content creator Marwah Khamas. “Wait a few minutes before applying your makeup to give your skin enough time to soak in the sunscreen. Then, continue with primer and foundation.” The L’Oréal Paris Bright Reveal SPF 50 Daily UV Lotion has an invisible texture that blends well into all skin tones and acts as a primer for makeup.
