It’s no secret that brows are a big deal, whether they’re arched, bleached or fluffy and full. If it’s the latter look you’re after, microblading will help you achieve it. Unlike a volumizing brow gel or thickening pomade that washes off within a day, microblading is a more permanent way of enhancing sparse-looking brows. Below, find out everything you need to know about the treatment before you get it done, with insight from Amy Kernahan, CEO and owner of a|k Studio.

What Is Microblading?

“Microblading is a method of cosmetic tattooing using a handheld tool that consists of a very fine, thin blade that will simulate hair strokes when etched into the skin with pigment,” says Kernahan. A skilled microblading artist will be able to mimic the look of naturally full brows and create a shape that’s suited to your lifestyle, hair color, skin tone and facial features.

Who Should Consider Microblading?

The best candidates for microblading are those with normal to dry skin, says Kernahan, because these skin types are better able to retain the pigmentation. If your skin is oily or mature, she suggests looking into powder brows instead of microblading. Microblading works for all skin tones and hair colors.

What Happens at a Microblading Appointment?

Most microblading appointments will start with an initial consultation, which will vary from artist to artist. “When I do client consultations, I always like to see what their daily routine is — whether they fill in their eyebrows with eyebrow powder or pencil or not. That will give me an idea of how bold or light I want to go,” explains Kernahan. “I also examine how much natural hair they have versus not having hair.”

While Kernahan appreciates seeing pictures of her clients’ brow goals to get an idea of the style and shape they’re going for, she says she customizes each brow design to the client’s “facial shape, natural brow pattern, and hair color.” Once she has a clear idea of what the client wants, Kernahan maps out the shape of the brows and starts tattooing.

How Long Does Microblading Take?

“I personally book two-and-a-half hours for my clients to ensure I have ample time for mapping, color, selection, and treatment time,” says Kernahan. Again, this process will vary based on salon and technician.

How Much Does Microblading Cost?

The cost of microblading will vary based on your city, the salon you visit and the discretion of your artist. According to Microblading San Diego, the national average cost for a microblading appointment is $500.

How Long Does Microblading Last?

“The pigment can last up to five years in the skin, but typically needs to be touched up every 18 to 24 months to refresh shape and color,” says Kernahan. If you’re tired of repurchasing brow products and spending a significant chunk of your makeup routine filling in your brows, microblading is a worthwhile investment.

How Long Does Microblading Take to Heal?

It takes about one to two weeks for microblading to heal, and about one month for the color to fully settle into the skin. Kernahan supplies her clients with an antimicrobial lavender hydrosol to apply for the first seven days after the appointment, and encourages them to gently cleanse the area morning and night. “I always advise my clients to avoid direct sunlight, chlorine or saltwater, harsh cleansers or creams, sweating or picking at the treatment area during the healing process,” she adds.

Some redness and peeling is normal, but with proper aftercare, it should subside within a few days. If you’re concerned about your microblading results, don’t be afraid to reach out to your technician or to a board-certified dermatologist.
