Whether we’re decking out for a formal Zoom dinner or dolling up for a virtual movie night, playing with bold makeup products has been keeping our editors busy (and very happy!) during this time at home. We’ve tried out-of-the-box graphic liner, dyeing our hair at home and even DIY-ing lash extensions. Next up on our list? Testing bold, bright spring lip colors, and as luck would have it, the YSL Beauty Tatouage Couture Velvet Cream Liquid Lipsticks dropped just in time. Ahead, seven of our editors tried various shades of the new velvet liquid lippie, and shared their thoughts about the color, texture and more. Will these be our new go-to lip colors to slick on before our next virtual hang out? Read on to find out.

Shade: 209 Anti-Social Prune

I’m a huge deep berry lip kind of girl, but now that it's spring, the color feels too dark. I love that this shade is like a brightened up version of the look, so I can still get my fix. The texture is creamy and feels soft and comfortable on my lips, while providing a long-lasting finish. I also love the angled applicator; it allows me to get a precise and even application, which is great considering I'm a little bit rusty and too lazy to apply lip liner. Will I be wearing lipstick on the daily during social distancing? Not a chance, but whenever I have a FaceTime happy hour or need a little bit of a pick-me-up, I'll be reaching for this.

Shade: 210 Nude Sedition

A mauvey-purple nude is the perfect shade for me. I feel that it nicely complements the olive/yellow undertones in my skin and makes me look more alive when I’m hopping on a FaceTime call or video chat. Nude Sedition has immediately become my fave because of this. It’s dark enough to make me look like I’m wearing a bold lip color on camera but subtle enough to look like a stain IRL. I like that it gives off a very matte berry finish that I can pair with just winged liner or a subtle bronze-y eyeshadow look. The best part? I’ve eaten, drank and spent a whole day-into-night with it on, and it barely budged.

Shade: 203 Rose Dissident

My initial impression of this creamy liquid lipstick is that it applies like a dream. The super soft and velvety texture calls for a smooth application with serious pigmentation — a little goes a very long way. My favorite part about it, though, is that it doesn’t feel like your typical drying matte liquid lipstick but has the same staying power. I chose the color Rose Dissident, which is a beautiful bright red that makes me feel pretty and put together despite wearing very little makeup on the rest of my face — my new social-distancing norm. I’m so in love with this lipstick that I’m seriously tempted to buy all the other colors.

Shade: 204 Beige Underground

Take one look in my lipstick bag (yes, I have one of those) and you’ll see this lippie sticking out like a sore thumb against my peachy, pink and ultra-subdued nude lipsticks. I know it says “Beige” in the name, but this punchy pink-ish, reddish, orange-ish shade is anything but. I was a little nervous about how bright the color was, but as soon as I applied it to my lips, I was instantly in love. Not only was the formula super creamy and hydrating, but the color also made me feel summer-ready in just one swipe. Plus, the applicator made getting a smooth line around my lips way easy. While it’s definitely not in the shade range I normally gravitate towards, I’ve been loving the brightness it brings to my makeup look.

Shade: N211 Chili Incitement

Between Zoom meetings and walks to the kitchen, the last thing I’m thinking about is reapplying my lipstick these days. But after trying this velvet cream matte lip stain for the purposes of this review,  I’m completely sold on the product. This creamy formula glides on like a liquid lipstick but feels like a hydrating balm that stays put. Throughout the day, as it very slowly fades, my lips get a slightly bitten/tinted look that I’m absolutely here for. I feel like the longer I have it on, the more I love the color! My shade N211 Chili Incitement reflects the name of the shade perfectly — a spicy, pepper red with a slight orange undertone. Thankfully, there’s enough red within this shade to make my pearly whites look even better on camera.

Shade: 212 Rouge Rebel

On a regular day (and especially now), my makeup routine is pretty minimal, sans lipstick, but that’s mostly because I can’t be bothered to reapply my lip color every few hours, which is where this new lippie comes in. Let me tell you, this stuff stays on. Not to mention, the shade Rouge Rebel is the most beautiful deep orange-y/red hue that instantly brightens up my face and makes me feel put together (even in my sweatsuits).

Shade: 206 Club Bordeaux

Honestly, I’m so surprised by how incredibly soft and comfortable this new YSL formula is! Most long-lasting lip colors I’ve tried either dry down hard and crack by hour two or they don’t even last for two hours. So to have a lipstick that is soft and leaves your lips feeling supple but still can last after the third iced chai latte is a god-send. I love this berry red shade —  it’s bold yet sophisticated and complements my skin’s warm clay undertones. I really want to try it out on a date … maybe I’ll just have to schedule me a Zoom date for the time being.
